Top 4 Benefits Of Yoga

Updated: Nov 23, 2019

Yoga has been in existence since thousands of years now. But yoga has recently been in buzz due to various reasons. What exactly made yoga a popular form of physical activity in 21st century? There are a million reasons, but here are four main benefits of yoga which attracted a lot of practitioners.

1] Enhance Flexibility

Speaking of Yoga, the first impression for most people is that “you must be flexible in order to do yoga.” Especially performing poses like the downward-facing dog, seated forward bend, and standing forward fold, etc. However, it is not true. Yoga is welcomed for all with different body flexibility. What we can guarantee is that you do not need to be flexible to do yoga, but if you continue the exercise regularly, you will find a gradual increase in your flexibility! Eventually, those poses seemingly impossible will become a piece of cake for you!

2] Develop Strength

This benefit should not be too surprising, since yoga is an exercise! Some poses such as Chaturanga and boat pose actually can stimulate muscles in the same way as push-ups and planks do (those postures are also workable for yoga beginners!) Statistics show that regularly doing yoga for more than two months, people get to increase their body mass and improved their physical strength.

3] Reduce Stress

This is one of the big attractions yoga has. Physically speaking, yoga poses combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing, and relaxation movements which can lower blood pressure and improve heart function. Spiritually speaking, it helps people relax and relieve them from their mundane burdens. Some yoga trainers even offer classes that are specifically geared towards certain issues, such as anxiety or depression.

4] Keep Fit

Last but not least, exercising helps keep fit, and yoga is no exception. Even yoga is considered a slow-paced exercise, it helps burn calories and consumes fat, driving weight loss. Some may argue that the calories yoga consumes is way less than traditional exercise (e.g., running, brisk walking,) nonetheless, yoga can raise one’s perception toward their body: the individual will become more wary of their food intake and make better food choices, which leads to healthier diet and weight loss.
